On a beautiful Spring day in 2022, a nest was dislodged from the roof of my house and a  baby starling bounced off to land literally at my feet… a sign that told me in no uncertain terms that it needed help. With the assistance of the internet, my daughter’s knowledge of chicken-rearing and the local feed store, I whipped up some food, wrapped up a hot water bottle with a towel, and put the little guy in a box. And then I hoped for the best. I had embarked on the most extraordinary journey of learning, and over the next four months I grew to understand, care for, and bond with a wild bird – until the call of the wild called him home. These images are based upon photographs I took in the last few days we shared together. It became my way of working through how much I will always miss him.
